Music: Herstory

Ideally, I would cover every single track in this album in detail because it’s an incredibly solid set of songs – 耐聽, and exciting. I don’t think I’ve been this eager to get my hands on an album in a very long time. This might be counter-intuitive because there is only one track on this album that is upbeat, so I think S.H.E deserves some special attention for what they did with 離開地球表面, and how they managed to translate the song into their distinct vibe, while keeping the original intact. Best Cover: 如煙 by 艾怡良 如煙 is incredibly difficult to sing, mostly because it’s such a flat song. Lyrics-wise, it’s a powerhouse, packed with line after line of 阿信’s genius, but musically, it’s difficult to emote more and more, as the singing is lengthy, and requires repetition. The reason I’d pick this as best cover is because 艾怡良 not only doesn’t go with a full band, she strips it down to acoustic, and manages to sing it without fatiguing the melody line. I suspect something …

[Cover by Jasmine & Cedric]

I honestly love covering Chinese songs, but never really do it on video. Not going to claim to be a singer, but it’s a hobby, and a really fun thing to do with another person. Maybe I’ll start leaving more of them here.

[Threeway PK]

It’s fun to talk music with other people. I always found that my love for the chinese music scene alienated me from my friends, who were not interested, or sometimes even condescending about my preference in music. Over the last 10 years, however, I’ve found individuals here and there, who are unabashed fans as well. Their presence in my own listening journey has always given me a lot of joy, so I’ve decided to do some fun things with them. If any of you out there are closet Mando Music lovers, and would love to connect and talk music. Let me know! 張震嶽 is a longtime artist in the industry with a huge body of work – famous songs include: 分手吧,愛我別走,自由 etc. We did a Best 3 comparison to see how how his discography vibes with us in different ways. Best 3  – Alex F. Disclaimer: How I chose these songs is solely based on this criteria – If I were only to loop 3 songs out of his whole discography for the rest of my …

Music: March 2, A (Mini) NewRelease Haul

G.E.M. G.E.M. is maturing in sound, and expanding in her audience reach after her super successful stint on 我是歌手. As a mando listener, this song does its strong mandopop melody/lyric vibe extremely well, and is a solid addition to mainstream chinese music. Her solid vocal performance will give this track a strong permanence in karaoke and Top 10s for a while. Classical chinese influence is my weakness, musically and lyrically. These two can sing, together they are absolutely divine, and the impeccable precision of 许嵩’s lyrics makes my heart teary every time I listen to this song. JJ Lin Jung Yong Hwa has always been on my to-watch list, even though I am not a KPOP listener. This collaboration is beautiful, both because it’s catchy and epic enough for a collaboration between these two singers, but also because its an actual bilingual track that is cohesive. The world needs more of these. What other new releases do …

Music: Gentle Bones EP (Joel Tan)

Lately I’ve been slowly feeling my way beyond my staple playlists into uncharted artist territory. Every year I have about 3-4 of these seasons where I expand and listen to new artists. Most of the year i spend intimately with the music I already have, or following only the musicians that I am already familiar with. I am aware that I’m a little late for this EP by Gentle Bones (Joel Tan), but it was too lovely to not blog about. Featuring 5 tracks, Gentle Bones is a mellow, indie EP with a kick. Relaxed but not loose, chill without sounding monotonous, the tracks slide smoothly into each other, making it extremely easy to finish listening to the CD and suddenly realize, “What? It’s done?” and proceed to loop. 1. Until We Die 2. Elusive 3. Save Me 4. Settle Down 5. Lost I’m a big fan of following local talent, and Gentle Bones is a sound that fits right in with my playlists. Conceptually, his music videos are interested and I am curious to …
