This spoken word piece by Yrsa Daley-Ward continues to be one of the most compelling spoken word performances in my life. I adore the way music plays second-lead, complementing the poetry and also shaping space around the words so they can expand and impact.

Look for your self
because it never helps to hear from anyone else.

I was never particularly drawn to spoken word until hearing this track. I remember the feeling of holding my breath, of other sounds falling into the velvet of white noise and Daley-Ward’s voice coming almost from inside my chest. It was arresting, that first time.

even in the rain
even in the snow

Every listen since moves me in a different way.
