Maybe it sounds counter-intuitive, but sometimes on the lazy days the perfect piece of attire is a stiff, structured white shirt.
The fitted white button up is a staple to every wardrobe, almost seamlessly perfect in all its pairings, and for any occasion. That’s because it’s pretty much designed intentionally, to be this adaptable.
A structured, well-tailored white shirt is pretty hard to make, and even more difficult to find though. For every body type, there is a different fit that works.
For years I’ve been hunting for a white button up within a reasonable price range that I could add to my wardrobe after I outgrew my old one, but it was a good 3-4 years of fruitless searching. I was never satisfied with the fit around the chest, or around the waist, or the way the collar sat, etc.
I like to to see my fabric of habits in a similar manner.
Habits are not the easiest to construct, and there are many different fits for habits, unique to the people who have them. Some habits are about understanding your self, and reacting in appropriate ways to protect you, and also the people around you. Other habits are about cultivating a consistency that can hold their own in shifting circumstances, and tough conditions.
It’s a tricky business to look for the right combination of habits, sometimes, it takes years to find the exactness of them.
But it’s almost a guarantee that when the chest and waist fit and fold at the right places, and the collar stands where it needs to stand, that you feel good without having to second guess your decision for the rest of the day!
Good habits are really great for lazy days.
They provide the fallback option you need on the days you are tired, and incapable of being intentional in all your decision-making.
On the worst days, the most lethargic days, and the most frustrating days, good habits – like a great button up shirt – can get you through and keep you looking good even when you aren’t feeling it. They keep you functioning, and encourage your integrity, even when you feel like giving in or taking a sloppier route.
I’m still in the process of finding my perfect fit of habits.
More concisely, I am making myself a perfect fit of habits.
But hopefully as I tailor, cut and stitch them together, like a well-made shirt, they will last me a long, long time.
